BIOGRAPHY

LaPulgha, named after the cartoon character Fifi the Flea (the little dancer flea in the Tom and Jerry episode with a flea circus), was born in Bogota, Colombia on June 7, 1981. The name arose because she was unable to stay still and focus on her mixes…instead, she would dance as she would spin. Because she is of Latin decent, she wanted to keep her name Hispanic and remind people of her roots. Born in a family of artists, chefs and writers; she developed a deep sense for the arts since a very young age. Formerly a piano player, LaPulgha always had an ear for music because of her love for dancing. Growing up in different places in the world such as South America, the Caribbean, Paris and Florida helped her gain a sense of the different cultures and sounds that come with each different place.

Formerly and currently a dancer, instructor and choreographer, LaPulgha began to DJ only two years ago. It was something that she always wanted to do, yet because of her passion for dancing, she never got around to it. It was thanks to the immense vinyl collection and the turntables that she had handy at home when living with Dj Brotherhood that she truly began to explore the art of DJ’ing.
For a year, her self-critical nature kept her locked at home practicing under the eyes and ears of her beloved Brotherhood. It took of a series of unfortunate events and a “catastrophe” to fully turn her into DJ’ing. For 8 months LaPulgha woke up every morning to spin records in order to keep her mind clear. To her, the music of her life was gone, and she became determined to keep it alive. Brotherhood would remain alive, through her, until his time to return to sunny Miami.
As the Vice-President of Dopamine Records, she became more educated in a genre of music previously unknown to her: Electro. Because of its dark nature, she geared towards funky breaks and freestyle; for it reminds her that the sun always shines.
Shortly after her debut in her home career, LaPulgha was offered to spin for free at a small bar (Blue) in South Beach, and because of her versatility and her music selection, she rapidly moved to another paying gig at the Office and by doing private events. Because of her ties with Medley, she has been given the opportunity to share the tables with the Geishaz, an international community of talented female Dj’s.
Because of her love for Jazz, LaPulgha’s music of preference is Neo-Soul and Old School Hip Hop. However, because all that Brotherhood left behind was a vast collection of funky breaks and freestyle records, she became familiar with those sounds and acquired a love for them.
With her dancing career, she was always forced to keep up with several styles of music, making her an extremely versatile DJ who can feel any kind of sound that contains a beat. “Hearing LaPulgha reminds me of eating at a restaurant. You can taste a cold meal with an appetizer, a warmer-tasting meal with the main course, a cold chill with an accompanying drink, and sweet and dreamy dessert to end it all”. It is apparent that the chefs in her family taught her well: how to make a recipe for a perfect ride in the world of music.
